Lost Angel (21-30)

In the previous chapter, an old lady told Ellen and Hilda that there is hope and something good will happen but Hilda wasn’t convinced with what the lady said. Unlike Hilda, her daughter Ellen had hope and she was desperately wishing that her father was still alive. When Hilda started to believe that her husband was dead and hope is gone, Doug happens to be alive. Ellen recognized him while she was walking down the street and she was very happy and filled with joy to see him again. Hilda was also pleased and she finally stopped grieving and started smiling once again. Moreover, Mabel came to visit them with her son Billy and Ellen grows a crush on Billy but all Billy was interested about was horses.

Ellen was still thinking of the old lady they met underground and she was curious about what the future is hiding for her so she went to a lady who foresees the future and the woman told her that Ellen will someday find peace.

Later on, they all went back to London but Billy insisted on staying at the countryside because he enjoyed working at the stable with the horses but his mom didn’t allow him to stay. Mabel’s husband came back along with their elder son Percy and the war was finally officially over. After nagging constantly to go back to the countryside, Billy finally got the permission to go and Ellen wasn’t happy with the news because she was jealous of Sheila and thought they would start to go out. She went to the garden and started crying. Percy saw her and tried to comfort her but it didn’t work so he hugged and after the hug he started to grow a crush on Ellen. He once meets Ellen and Hilda down the street and thought of asking Ellen out in front of her mom but the mother (Hilda) refused because she doesn’t want Ellen to go out with guys and she doesn’t want to ruin her innocence and believes its better if she stays naïve.

I tried my best to like this novel but its pretty much the most boring I’ve ever came across :P Sorry (A)

Lost Angel (Chapters 1 - 3)

This is the most boring and depressing novel I've ever read, Thanks Mrs. Shabana ._.

Anyways, so the story was is set in the 1940s south of London. It begins by Hilda waking Ellen, her 10 year-old daughter, in order to escape the bombing and hide in the shelter. Few hours later when the bombing has stoppedm Hilda and Ellen go back to find that their house along with the entire neighborhood had been demolished and turned ruins. Moreover, her parents were crushed by their house. Hilda was devasted by her parents' death but she had to hold on and act strong for the sake of her daughter. Although she was a mother and a wife, Hilda still felt lonely when her parents passed away because they were always there for her.
Because Hilda couldn't find a shelter, she decided to take Ellen and go to Mabel's _her friend_ house. Later on, Hilda was informed that children had to be evacuated so she sent a letter to her friend Gertrude Forbes(Gertie) asking her if Ellen can stay with her since she lives in Somerset, a peaceful city. As the novel proceeds, we discover that Hilda's mom used to be a domestic at Gertie's father's house, or palace as Hilda described it. Hilda and Gertie were both young back then and thats how they knew one another.
When Hilda and her daughter reach Gertie's house, Hilda was surprised because she had always thought that Gertie was posh but her house (or a small cottage as mentioned in the book) and her sense of fashion were too contradictory.
Although the house was smaller than their own, Ellen seemed very please and comforted and I'm assuming that she likes animals for she was amused by Gertie's pets.
